THE CARBON FOOTPRINT
The term carbon footprint is generally defined as the total amount of carbon dioxide equivalents [CO2e] (greenhouse gases) emitted over the full life cycle of a product or service and is usually expressed as CO2 in kilograms or tonnes. The most effective means of calculating an accurate Carbon Footprint is to use the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) method of analysis of the quantity of fossil fuels consumed in the production of goods and/or services.
On a personal level, the carbon footprint is defined as the total amount of carbon dioxide attributable to the actions of you, an individual (mainly through your energy use) over a period of one year.
Personal Carbon Footprints can consider direct emissions (typically) from energy used in the home and in transport; including travel by cars, aeroplanes, rail and other public transport only, or can include indirect emissions (including CO2 emissions as a result of goods and services consumed).
Corporate Carbon Footprints can consider direct emissions (typically) from energy used in the office and in transport; including travel by cars, aeroplanes, rail and other public transport only, or can include indirect emissions that result from all goods and services consumed in the operation of the corporation.
